Speculative Applications

A speculative application is one you send to companies you are interested in working for, even if they are not advertising any current vacancies.  Many jobs are never advertised and if you wait for the ideal job to be advertised you could be missing out on a vast number of opportunities.  Along with our tips for creating your perfect CV, there are some additional areas to think about when you make a speculative application.

Do your research

Clearly demonstrate your knowledge and interest in the organisation and the sector. See our pages on company research.

Send to a named contact

Send your application to an appropriate named contact wherever possible. Research on a company's website and on LinkedIn can help with this.

Follow up

Following up an application is important but always allow an appropriate amount of time before contacting the person. Speak to an adviser if you're unsure.
